While early autumn settles across our neighborhoods, our hearts and prayers are already turning toward Christmas—a holy season of Gospel hope, fraternity, and compassionate giving.

 

Following the example of St. Francis of Assisi, who saw Christ reflected in every marginalized brother and sister, we know the coming winter will bring harsh challenges across Detroit. Neighbors without shelter, families stretched thin by rising costs, and homebound elders living on modest fixed incomes will look to us for warmth, food, and human dignity.

 

To keep our shelves stocked and our doors wide open, we must begin preparing for Christmas 2026 now.

What We Need Most to Prepare for Winter 2026

For Brothers and Sisters Experiencing Homelessness:

  • Heavy-duty winter coats (men’s and women’s, all sizes)

 

  • Thermal socks, insulated gloves, knit hats, and scarves

 

  • Waterproof winter boots and sturdy footwear

 

  • Cold-weather rated sleeping bags and heavy thermal blankets

 

  • Hand and foot warmers

 

  • Reusable water bottles and insulated thermoses

 

  • Flashlights and headlamps with fresh batteries

 

  • Travel-size hygiene kits (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, razors)

 

  • Basic first-aid kits and OTC wellness items (ibuprofen, adhesive bandages, lip balm)

 

  • Durable backpacks and duffel bags

 

For Low-Income Families:

  • Holiday food pantry staples (stuffing, canned vegetables, cranberry sauce, baking mixes, canned hams)

 

  • Grocery store gift cards Kroger, Costco, and Walmart)

 

  • Diapers (all sizes, especially sizes 4–6), baby wipes, and infant formula

 

  • New toys for children (ages 0–12): learning toys, board games, dolls, trucks, books, and art supplies
