All Souls Day and Remembering Shorty

All Souls Day and Remembering Shorty

The evening of October 10 changed our community forever. Just a stone's throw away from Highland Park on Woodward Ave, a life was abruptly taken near the Sunoco gas station in Detroit. This is not just a news headline; it is the painful reality of a woman many of us at Franciscan Ministries knew and cared for.

Known to many as 'Shorty' and some as Shaquita, she was more than just a face in the neighborhood. Despite her challenges, including her battles with severe addiction, she found solace and support at Franciscan Ministries. Just two weeks before the incident, she brought a new life into this world, giving birth to her eighth child behind the very gas station where she was later killed. Like so many others, her story is a testament to the human spirit's resilience and the harsh realities many face on the streets of Detroit.

While many questions remain unanswered, what is clear is the dedication of the Detroit Police Department, EMS, and the Coroner. The scene, buzzing with activity, indicates a thorough and active investigation. Although it is still uncertain if suspects have been identified or apprehended, the community remains hopeful for justice.

At Franciscan Ministries, we are deeply committed to the well-being of Detroit's residents. This incident underscores the need for increased vigilance, community awareness, and outreach. We believe in proactive steps, from community patrols to awareness programs, to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Franciscan Ministries has stood as a beacon of hope in Detroit since 2014. From offering essential services to providing a safe space, our mission is to uplift those in need. This All Souls Day, we remember and honor Shorty, ensuring that her legacy pushes us to do more for those we serve.

In the wake of such a tragedy, reflection is essential. As we mourn Shorty's loss, we are reminded of the importance of community, unity, vigilance, and prayer.

Eternal rest grant her, O Lord, and may your perpetual light shine upon her. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Mike

Franciscan Ministries Annual Christmas Appeal

Sisters and Brothers,

Peace and all good to you,

Franciscan Ministries is entering its tenth year of service, and as we prepare for the additional needs of our community as Christmas approaches, we reflect on our impact and the lives we have touched, thanks to the generosity of people like you.

Since our beginnings in 2014, we have been driven by the vision and dedication of our members, who are part of the Secular Franciscan Order. Inspired by the teachings of St. Francis of Assisi, we are committed to serving those in need.

Throughout the year, Franciscan Ministries Inc. has been a reliable source of support for groceries, simple meals, and clothing for individuals and families facing various challenges. We strive to spread compassion and dignity to those who need it most.

This Christmas, we aim to go above and beyond our regular services and bring hope to even more lives. With your support, we can make a significant difference in the lives of countless individuals. Your contribution will enable us to:

·         Serve warm meals: Your donation will help us provide a delicious, nourishing meal for those who might otherwise go without.

·         Support emergency relief efforts: Unfortunately, as winter approaches, many individuals and families face crises. With your help, we can provide immediate assistance, including warm day shelter, blankets, sleeping bags, warm winter coats, and other necessities.

·         Organize community events and outreach programs:

o   Your donation will help us organize events that promote unity, celebrate diversity, and bring people together during special times of the year.

o   Distribute back-to-school backpacks for children.

o   Distribute gift packages: We want to bring gifts to children and families who may not have the means to celebrate. It can be in the way of toys, games, and/or essential items for those in need.

o   Distribute bicycles in the spring to children.

o   Distribute winter coats beginning in November for all ages.

Your generosity has the power to transform lives and ignite a sense of hope in the hearts of those who are struggling. Together, we can make this Christmas memorable for our Detroit community residents.

To donate, please visit our website at www.franciscanministry.org, call or text me at 810-814-0047, or email at mikecars10@gmail.com. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, will significantly impact the lives of those we serve.

Franciscan Ministries Annual Christmas Appeal

Dear Sisters and Brothers

Peace be with you!

If  you have a moment I would like to again introduce you to our organization serving the poor in the City of Detroit and beyond.

Our Experience of hopelessness, extreme poverty and poor health are reflected in the statistics shown on the attached map. The map also shows Franciscan Ministries area of service.  Starting with the poorest of the poor.

In response to the current crises of poverty in our area, the sisters and brothers of the O.F.S. (Order of St. Francis Secular) have created a new way of serving the poor in areas where no one else is willing to go. It is aptly called “Franciscan Ministries Inc.” Using the same model we use at St. Aloysius of going to the people where they are, we minister to the poor not only in the downtown area but also in the 132 sq. miles of the City that is not a part of the current ongoing revitalization as well as other areas of Southeast Michigan.

If you are able to help us, when necessary, we can pick up any donations when they are ready.

On October 4th, 2014 (Feast day of St. Francis) we received notice from the Internal Revenue Service that we have been determined as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

I am attaching our Christmas Giving Tree Appeal. I hope that the Parish Community will take a look at it and consider helping.

I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

 God’s Continued Blessings

 Mike

Season of Care for Creation 2019 By Carolyn Townes OFS: OFS-USA - J.P.I.C. Animator

We are coming up on the time of the year when we give mindful and deliberate attention to our Sister Mother Earth. Yes, I know there are many things occupying our minds, our hearts and our prayers at this time. But our God is bigger, greater and mightier than all those things. We must trust and have faith that the Holy Spirit is doing a mighty work that we are not privileged to see right now.
