All Souls Day and Remembering Shorty

All Souls Day and Remembering Shorty

The evening of October 10 changed our community forever. Just a stone's throw away from Highland Park on Woodward Ave, a life was abruptly taken near the Sunoco gas station in Detroit. This is not just a news headline; it is the painful reality of a woman many of us at Franciscan Ministries knew and cared for.

Known to many as 'Shorty' and some as Shaquita, she was more than just a face in the neighborhood. Despite her challenges, including her battles with severe addiction, she found solace and support at Franciscan Ministries. Just two weeks before the incident, she brought a new life into this world, giving birth to her eighth child behind the very gas station where she was later killed. Like so many others, her story is a testament to the human spirit's resilience and the harsh realities many face on the streets of Detroit.

While many questions remain unanswered, what is clear is the dedication of the Detroit Police Department, EMS, and the Coroner. The scene, buzzing with activity, indicates a thorough and active investigation. Although it is still uncertain if suspects have been identified or apprehended, the community remains hopeful for justice.

At Franciscan Ministries, we are deeply committed to the well-being of Detroit's residents. This incident underscores the need for increased vigilance, community awareness, and outreach. We believe in proactive steps, from community patrols to awareness programs, to prevent such tragedies in the future.

Franciscan Ministries has stood as a beacon of hope in Detroit since 2014. From offering essential services to providing a safe space, our mission is to uplift those in need. This All Souls Day, we remember and honor Shorty, ensuring that her legacy pushes us to do more for those we serve.

In the wake of such a tragedy, reflection is essential. As we mourn Shorty's loss, we are reminded of the importance of community, unity, vigilance, and prayer.

Eternal rest grant her, O Lord, and may your perpetual light shine upon her. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Mike
